What is an oxidizer? An oxidizing substance is an element or compound that receives an electron from another species in an oxidation-reduction reaction. It can be said that oxidizing substances are reduced because they gain electrons. When an oxidizing substance gains electrons, it is also reduced.
It includes substances that, whether or not themselves combustible, cause or contribute to the combustion of other materials, usually by giving off oxygen. Such substances may be contained in an object.
